Bright, intelligent, passionate and free, Eleanor Marx (played by Bafta and Golden Globe nominated performer Romola Garai, Suffragette, Atonement), the youngest daughter of Socialist Revolutionary Karl Marx, is the first woman to link the themes of feminism and socialism. She takes part in workers’ battles and fights for women’s rights and the abolition of child labour in London. In 1883, she meets Edward Aveling (Patrick Kennedy, The Queen’s Gambit) and her life is forever changed by their passionate love.
MISS MARX is written and directed by Award-winning filmmaker Susanna Nicchiarelli (Nico, 1988), who created the film as a timely reminder of the inevitable difficulties and contradictions of the fight for equality; extremely relevant to our times today.
“The film looks so rich: the fabrics and the costumes and the interior decoration are Victoriana by way of Etro in a constant autumnal splurge of russets and golds.” SCREEN INTERNATIONAL
“An audacious retelling… Romola Garai going full Courtney Love makes for one of the film’s livelier tilts against biopic proprietaries … She pulls off a performance here that is reserved, unshowy but absolutely affecting…” THE GUARDIAN
